Heart Health Month <3

Sharing the Love at the APJCC

February is a tiny little month, full of short days and long, cold nights. Maybe that’s why we pack it full of love. February brings us Valentine’s Day, time off with the kids for “ski week", and is the official month for National Heart Health. 

This February at the JCC we hosted BodySpec scans to give you an overall picture of your individual body composition, a heart health meditation session, the Red Cross blood drive, and, my personal favorite, two Zumba dance parties with replete with refreshments and raucousness.

I took my first Zumba class at the JCC in late 2009, and became instantly hooked. After a couple of months, I was losing weight. But the most recognizable difference came when I was running after my twin boys at the playground – not only could I suddenly keep up with their pace, I could pass them and just keep on running. The first time it happened, I thought very clearly: “This is because of Zumba, and this … is … AWEsome.” They’re still trying to catch up with me.

February is over, but here at the JCC we’re focused on you and your heart health every month. Adding exercise to your regular routine makes an enormous difference in your heart health, as well as for your overall well-being! If you haven’t found yourself in a group exercise class yet, try one out – it’s inspiring and motivating to be surrounded by supportive classmates all working hard together (or all dancing like crazy people, as the case may be in my specific classes…).

Raffle Winner

In a celebration for Heart Health Month we raffled of a Fit Bit with a heart rate monitor for group fitness participants.  Our winner was  Sheila Raymond.

I enjoyed taking part in the "class challenge" and two months ago wouldn't have been in a position to win this, or even take part as my exercise routine was pretty much non-existent. I've been a JCC member for just over 5 years and, during that time, have had periods when it's been hard to even justify continuing being a member! Of course, work always gets in the way, but just before Christmas I sprained my left knee and realized then that I really had to become fitter, leaner and stretchier if I was going to be able to keep hiking and biking (and running after the grandkids)! Coming back in January, although nursing an injury, enabled me to try out some classes and get back once more into a reasonable rhythm. The class challenge was a fun event. The JCC is fortunate in having some excellent class teachers for spin, yoga and pilates and I'm really enjoying both the participation as well as feeling stronger and fitter.
