Our Russian Language programming is run by Rabbi Ilana Baird. Rabbi Ilana has served communities in Russia, Germany, Israel, and the United States.  She founded a liberal synagogue in Haifa and is a graduate of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion’s Israeli Rabbinical Seminary program. Club Noar (for pre-teens): Olive Oil and Our Miracle Stories

Date: Sunday, December 10 
Time: 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Cost: $20 (drop-ins) or $180 (annual membership)
 
We are going to celebrate two Hanukkah miracles: the miracle of oil and the miracle of Jewish survival! Children will participate in a Hanukah Olive Press workshop! We are going to learn an ancient method of Olive Oil Pressing with Rabbi Hecht. And we will also have an opportunity to ask Boris Kelman - a real Refusnik movement hero - some questions.
 

RSJ FUNDRAISING EVENT

Date: Sunday, Dec. 10th 
Time: 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
 
An invitation-only fundraising event at a private home for the APJCC's Russian-Speaking Jewish (RSJ) community programs.  
 
Minimum gift commitment at the event is $360, payable by Dec. 31st (your employer's corporate match, if available, will also count). 100% of the funds raised will support our RSJ programming. No portion of any gift is used for overhead or personal fitness operating expenses.
 
In appreciation of your support, you will receive generous hospitality, including wine, food and several guest speakers on topics of specific interest to our Russian-Speaking Jewish community.

Jewishnik: "Wine, Paint and Lights", Masterclass with Svetlana Yanez

About Svetlana Yanez: 
My name is Svetlana Yanez, I was born in in Kiev and raised near Moscow.  Before the age of seventeen I graduated from six years of art school.  I graduated from University with my Bachelor Degree in Nuclear Science, however art, history and music has always been my passion.  After receiving my degree I returned to school and completed a 3 year study of fashion and design. I immigrated to California in 1998 with my family.  I am happily married to a wonderful and supportive man and my 22 year old son attends University in San Luis Obispo.  I currently teach art classes for children ages 8 to 16 years old.  My instruction includes sketching and painting techniques, such as layering, staining and dry brushing. My favorite mediums are oil pastel, water color paints and pencils and mixed media.

Какой ребенок, да что там, какой взрослый не любит смотреть на радугу?  И наверняка все помнят, что между этим атмосферным явлением и Всемирным потопом - библейской истории о большом наводнении - прямая связь! А известно вам как выглядел знаменитый Ноев Ковчег и сам Ной? Давайте посмотрим на один из самых знаменитых сюжетов Библии глазами художников и разберемся в деталях этой истории. А также послушаем отрывки из детской оперы британского композитора Бенджамина Бриттена, которая так и называется "Ноев ковчег".

Spacecraft - big and small: BIG satellites; Small satellite for schoolers
 
Dr. Boris Yendler has long and successful career in the field of space engineering and science. He got his Ph.D. in mathematics from St. Petersburg University (Russia). During his tenure with NASA, Dr. Yendler participated in development and execution of the first attempt in history of mankind to grow plants (wheat) in space from seed-to-seed, which is needed for long-duration space missions. Developed with his participation "Salad Machine" to grow lettuce for astronauts is exhibited in Space section of Tech Museum, San Jose.  Also, Dr. Boris Yendler was a Principal Investigators of several tests conducted on the Mir Space Station and on the Space Shuttle. He is teaching at several universities. 
 
 

Club Noar (for pre-teens): Krav Maga and the Importance of Jewish Self-Defense, with David Kadosh (ZOA)

Date: Sunday, February 4

Instructor David Kadosh of the Zionist Organization of America examines the history of Jews as a fighting people, contrasted with the reality of life in the Diaspora, the rebirth of the Jewish warrior spirit in the Zionist movement, and the founding of the modern State of Israel. Krav Maga is a model for the Jewish return to self-defense. David teaches students the fundamentals of Krav Maga during this exciting educational event. No prior experience is necessary.
 
 
 

Tanya Melamed in Concert: Klezmer Music Night!

This concert will take you on a "journey around the world" through multiple music genres, languages and etnicities. It is a musical kaleidoscope where French chanson quickly swirls to Argentine tango, Russian and Gypsy romances, Yiddish and Sephardic songs along with virtuoso Klezmer compositions performed by violinist Alex Koffman.
 
 

Cultural Club for Adults with Julia Garamova: "The Story of Exodus in Art and Music"

Библейская история о Моисее, начиная с его чудесного спасения при рождении и до Исхода,  наполнена яркими событиями. Многие из них стали источником вдохновения для русских художников. На этой лекции мы узнаем, как выглядела мать Моисея, по мнению Тыранова, увидим сцену у несгораемого куста глазами Марка Шагала и переход евреев через Красное море на картинах Айвазовского и Крамского, а на полотнах Иванова -  чудеса, которые случились во время скитаний народа Израиля. Библейские сюжеты нашли отражение и в музыке. Сочинение Генделя «Израиль в Египте» уникально не только потому, что было написано всего за 20 дней, но и тем, что в нём нет Моисея, а главный герой -- израильский народ. Музыка Генделя - это красочные изобразительные номера, музыкальные картины, рисующие и казни египетские, и волны Красного моря.

Ongoing Classes

HEDER, for children 4-9 years old

HEDER - (Hebrew Educational Extracurricular program for Russian-speaking kids) is a program designed to acquaint your children with the Jewish Culture and the Hebrew Language in an engaging learn-through-play format. The program is intended for children aged 4 -9 (split into two age groups 4-6 and 7-9) and will be conducted in Russian. Each meeting will be broken down into sections. We welcome, and encourage, parents to volunteer.  Additionally, as part of our program, we will celebrate Shabbat and Holidays together, inviting the community to join us in the festivities.

Dates: Sept 10, Oct 8, Nov 5, Dec 10, Jan 21, Feb 11, March 18 (at Egyptian Museum in San Jose), April 22, and May 6          
Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm

 

Club Noar -- our youth club for children ages 10 to 12

Children from Russian-speaking Jewish families will get together and will have interesting discussions, debates, various projects and lots of fun. The program is held in English. The program is led by Rabbi Ilana Baird.
